The first formal piano lesson that I experienced was in 1979. My first piano I tuned was in 2002. Whether since as a student and performer, or as a tuner/technician, I have picked up some tips for keeping your piano healthy:
- Have a piano humidifier and dehumidifier installed under or inside the piano.
- Get the piano tuned on a regular basis.
- Polish the brass, like the pedals and the lid hinge.
- Avoid allowing direct sunlight upon the piano.
- Drinks can sweat or spill, so place them on something other than your piano.
- Live plants on or above the piano might attract splashes when watering, so beware.
- When windows are open too close to the piano, precipitation is a risk.
- A cold wall up against an upright piano might generate mildew.
- A radiator next to a piano could conceivably damage the piano with the heat.
- Avoid rolling a small piano using its own casters, due to the fragility of the front legs. Use a dolly instead.
- Do not allow children to play with their toys on the piano keys. The ivory will chip, and the sharps can break off.
- Avoid eating over the keyboard.
- Clean the keys using a gentle cleanser.
